Doing 67 minutes for Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July, and on this historic date the call is for people to celebrate his birthday by dedicating 67 minutes of their time to making the world a better place.

Start by changing the world around you and giving up some of your time doing something you love. Every little bit of effort makes a difference and counts towards the final impact.

Here are some tips on how you can make a difference this Mandela day:

  1. Collect nappies, old clothes and other essential items from family and friends and spend time at an orphanage feeding and playing with the babies after dropping off all the items you have collected.
  2. Volunteer at the SPCA or an Animal shelter and make an abandoned dog's day by taking it for walks and showing it some love. You can also collect tinned dog foods and other treats and take that along.
  3. Visit an Old Age Home and hand out chocolates or play a musical instrument and sing a song to the elderly to remind them they are special and not forgotten
  4. Collect food parcels and drop it off at a shelter for disadvantaged communities to brighten up their day.
  5. Do a room makeover for an underprivileged child by collecting linen, curtains and some paint. Spend the day painting and decorating their room to make them feel special and give them a space they can enjoy and love.
  6. Organize a river cleanup, or even a beach or forest cleanup in an area near you, to ensure that the environment around you is always clean and cared for. Click here for some photos of such an event.
  7. Help save a life by donating blood or registering as an organ donor.
  8. Buy and plant indigenous trees at your school or in your community to ensure a greener environment in the area you live in.
  9. Start an organic veggie garden at a nursery or school in an underprivileged area so that the kids can have access to fresh vegetables all year round.
  10. If you are unable to volunteer your precious time, donate to a worthy foundation or organization who look after the needs of the less advantaged or the environment.
Enjoy planning your Mandela Day event. Your efforts will be appreciated by those you choose to help and all our combined efforts will make our world a better place.
